Women refined and popularized the American silent film industry. They worked behind and in front of the camera, pioneering and dominating many professions, producing films, mentoring colleagues, and advancing cinema’s artistry. The labor, leadership, and creativity of these female visionaries turned the Hollywood film industry into one of the most successful forms of entertainment in the world.
