Crime is everywhere, no matter how quiet and friendly the town. Our May speaker will help us explore some of the dark and dangerous stories of the San Fernando Valley. For example, there is the story of Lucille Walker and Alexander Mackay, two young lovers who committed dozens of robberies in LA in the early 1930s. They were a media sensation – she was called the “red-haired bandit queen” years before the better-known Bonnie & Clyde.

James T. Bartlett is an Anthony Award-nominated author of true crime book The Alaskan Blonde. He also authored Gourmet Ghosts: Los Angeles, the first “history and mystery” guide book of ghosts, murders and mysteries at over 40 bars and restaurants in the L.A. area. He writes about history, true crime, travel and lifestyle for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News, National Geographic Traveller, BBC, Los Angeles Magazine, Hemispheres, High Life, Atlas Obscura, ALTA California, Frommers, Crime Reads and Real Crime, among others.
