From Obscurity to Glory: The Rise of LA and the San Fernando Valley” tracks how a syndicate run by Harry Chandler, Moses Sherman, and other power players in the early 1900s created much of the San Fernando Valley, helped facilitate its annexation to Los Angeles in 1915, and enriched themselves along with many others as it rose to prominence. Presented by author, Paul Haddad, this presentation includes dozens of photos and information on the Valley not included in his book, Inventing Paradise: The Power Brokers Who Created the Dream of Los Angeles.
Author of the Los Angeles Times Bestseller Inventing Paradise: The Power Brokers Who Created the Dream of Los Angeles — named one of the Best Nonfiction Books of 2024 by the Los Angeles Public Library — Paul Haddad has written several nonfiction books exploring the contextual roots of his native Los Angeles. Other titles include Freewaytopia: How Freeways Shaped Los Angeles and 10,000 Steps a Day in L.A.: 57 Walking Adventures.
As a writer and contributor, Haddad has examined Southern California for such media as the L.A. Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, The Times (UK), LAist, NPR, and HuffPo. An MFA graduate of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Haddad has been nominated for multiple Emmys as a documentary producer. He lives in Los Feliz.
